Chapter 599: Chapter 0599: Rescue (Request for Subscription)
“Is this the source of the world’s ‘Plague’?”
Donning a leather jacket and safety goggles to blend in with the clothing style of this world, Su Lu had infiltrated the City of Hope.
In his hand was a test tube containing a dark red solution.
It was extracted from a poor ‘Infected’ he’d encountered previously.
“Spiritual bacteria! This is the true terror that Lady Moon has brought to this world. The original version of these bacteria fused with various diseases in this world and transformed into a horrific plague.”
“The royal family, or rather the King, controls another ‘version’ of these bacteria. Using these spiritual bacteria, he created the ‘Infected’. They are incredibly strong and fast… Most importantly, they are immune to the spread of other plagues and do not actively transmit them. This has established the most stable force in the face of the plague, therefore holding great power…”
All of this stems from the ‘spiritual bacteria’.
The destructive aspect has caused millions of deaths in this world. On the other hand, its potential benefits allow people to become Occupational Persons.
Lady Moon obviously doesn’t care about these. If the ‘mysterious’ aspects in this world increase and the spiritual energy is revived, perhaps the Dawn of the Gods’ arrival would not be a bad choice.
A divine entity could easily crush any native resistance by simply sending an incarnation.
…
The streets of the City of Hope are very wide, the only downside would be the lack of pedestrians and the constant lingering of a pungent smell in the air.
Occasionally, you can see a few Beak Monsters in white uniforms passing by with people scampering to evade them.
Seizing the opportunity, Su Lu entered a restaurant and ordered a bowl of mediocre grain porridge. The food supply in the capital seemed to be strained due to the plague outbreak and the subsequent decline in food production, as confirmed by the prohibition of alcohol notice he noticed on the wall.
“No!”
At that moment, he saw through the window a homeless man on the street screaming as he was captured and dragged onto a prison cart by two Beak Monsters.
“Just another unfortunate vagrant getting taken by the ‘Crows’. You never see ’em again once they’ve been taken.”
The hunchbacked old man serving Su Lu his meal shook his head.
“A vagrant? Captured?”
Su Lu produced some local coins and asked, “Could you tell me more about that?”
“You must be from out of town, huh?”
The old man picked up the coins, his sparse teeth revealed as he smiled, “The City of Hope doesn’t accommodate idlers. You need a stable residence, otherwise… the King’s ‘Crows’ will conduct routine inspections during curfew… Once caught, you will vanish completely!”
“Not just that, sometimes, they forcibly take away young and beautiful girls. They use quarantine as an excuse, but the reality is, well …”
A muscular man beside them snickered at this.
“Regardless, the Kingdom has survived in the face of the plague, and no major epidemics have broken out in the city area…”
The old man quietly stated, shaking his head: “The fact that it has come to this is already commendable of the King.”
“Compared to this, isn’t the recent news far more shocking?” At the other end, a lean man who seemed no bigger than a monkey interjected: “The expedition team sent by the Kingdom to the City of the Plague is back. Their leader, a man named Lejay, claimed that he met the ‘Prophet’, has received god’s Revelation! He even said something about the plague originating from an Alien World… Fascinating theory, to say the least.”
“However… He truly revealed extraordinary strength… Right in front of the many influential figures…”
The old man murmured, “Recently, the honorable Lejay even established a religious sect, advocating for the complete eradication of the plague, and closing the doors to the world… I have no idea what that’s supposed to mean.”
Su Lu remained silent.
It appeared that Lejay had chosen a path of reformation, hoping to persuade the king and gain his support.
But for Su Lu, who had been able to discern some things, he knew that all of Lejay’s efforts would ultimately be in vain.
…
City of Hope, Balagon Prison, secret laboratory.
In the dim environment, screams of agony echoed constantly.
“I… have seen Hell.”
Deep underground, in a special cell, Lejay, whose limbs have been severed and bound by numerous chains on a cross, whispered to himself.
Originally, being the one who received the ‘Revelation’, he sought the King’s support.
However, the harsh reality had delivered a severe blow to him.
After his completion of duty, and sharing some of his sentiments, the King ordered his secret arrest under the influence of common soldiers and ‘Crows’ possessing supernatural strength and speed.
From that moment on, Lejay confirmed that those possessing supernatural strength existed within the Royal Family.
It was clear why the King arrested him. Covetousness!
He coveted the power Lejay gained from the crystal!
Unfortunately, after using the crystal to become an Occupational Person, the crystal disappeared completely.
This was Lejay’s stroke of luck. The King desired to learn everything about the ‘mysterious’ from him, thus sparing his life for now and placing him in the heavily fortified Balagon Prison.
That place was practically the Kingdom’s human experiment base.
Along the way, Lejay had seen many ‘experimental subjects’. Their appearances had been completely altered under the corruption of the bacteria.
However, there were also some ‘Crows’, who despite having lost their looks, gained brand new powers in return.
The King didn’t want the power of the ‘Crows’, he coveted the kind of supernatural power that Lejay possessed, the kind that appeared to have minor side effects!
“The origin of the plague… it was you… Jindum.”n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
Murmuring the name of the King, Lejay’s eyes were filled with hatred, “You were the leader of that Evil God organisation, the very culprit that led to the world’s mutation!”
“After usurping power, you further advanced your studies on those devilish things, desiring to create an army of supernatural beings of your own…”
“Damn it…”
Blood was seeping out from his wound, but his mind was filled with hatred.
He refused to accept fate!
Unable to accept that he would die here, while the true culprit in the outside world is getting away!
“That… indescribable existence… I pray to you… for your favor once more…”
Lejay chanted and prayed continuously with his lips that were bursting with blood.
As expected, nothing happened.
Furthermore, it seemed that the prison guards had become accustomed to his curses and paid no heed to his murmuring.
In the void, it seemed as if an invisible figure was passing by.
“Fine… I did not expect the protagonist to end up like this.”
As Su Lu watched this scene unfolding, he was slightly speechless.
He had now understood one thing – the reality was, after all, not a novel. There were no real ‘protagonists’!
Like Lejay, even though he got the ‘Golden Finger’ Su Lu gave him, he was thrown into prison by the King without doing much with the power.
‘Even the world’s favored child must follow the objective laws.’
Su Lu held the test tube filled with ‘spiritual bacteria’ and smashed it into the prison through the food slot, “If I don’t intervene, he might really die here.”
