Chapter 342: 214: The Pressure Is So Huge (First Update)_2

Chapter 342: Chapter 214: The Pressure Is So Huge (First Update)_2

“Full throttle, time to escape.”

No longer heeding the warnings of the union mechas, Monkey cranked the power furnace up to its maximum and then charged forward.

Sensing Monkey’s intent to escape, the force field materialized, a dense layer forming like thick cream in front of Monkey, but the newly installed power furnace instantly unleashed powerful thrust, counteracting the force field in front of them and propelling them a great distance forward out of thin air.

Feeling Monkey’s deft maneuvering, the union mecha’s airships leaped, each leap bringing them a bit closer to Monkey.

They didn’t want to destroy Monkey, just to get him under control.

But upon realizing that Monkey’s agility was far beyond their own, the union mechas heightened their level of caution towards him by a notch.

Six-meter-tall black mechas were deployed; they looked cumbersome, each with a massive force field generator on its back. Once they appeared, they locked onto Monkey with force fields and flew towards him.

In the plot mode of “Spirit Vessel,” the only way players have to judge the strength of other mechas early on, without a scanning chip, is by size.

Bigger means stronger, mightier means fiercer; the larger the mecha, the more formidable it is. A six-meter-tall mecha has better performance than the four-meter-tall Monkey.

Moreover, the adversaries were specialized capture mechas, equipped with devices and chips for apprehending crime suspects. If they managed to get close, there was only one route left—capture.

The black mechas on the screen didn’t seem fast, but their actual speed was off the charts.

After calculating the timing, Monkey said to Teddy Bear, “Hold tight, I’m about to accelerate.”

“Aren’t you afraid it’ll explode?”

“Don’t worry, it won’t… probably.”

“Let me down!”

“Too late.”

After a pause, Monkey immediately pushed the power furnace to its limits. The sudden surge in speed pressed Teddy Bear against the walls of the cockpit, and even Monkey’s squirrel almost got shredded by the acceleration.

The mecha began to creak and groan; the pilots of the union mechas had not expected Monkey to ramp up the acceleration to such an extent. The encircling net they were perfecting was directly broken through by Monkey, who charged towards the outskirts.

Monkey had also activated the Speed-up Chip; otherwise, in full-speed acceleration, there often wouldn’t be enough time to react. It was very easy for the mecha to collide with debris, ending in both machine and man destroyed.

The alarm bell in their ears grew shriller, and a dazzling red light bathed the cockpit in dangerous hues. Everything around them turned into streaming light, bringing Teddy Bear an encroaching sense of impending death.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

Just when Teddy Bear felt everything was coming to an end, the streaming light around them suddenly stopped. The stars in the void resettled, and the ferocious acceleration had ripped off a third of the mecha’s armor, but it had also allowed them to break through the blockade of the union mechas, reaching the outside world.

Seeing the familiar stars, Teddy Bear almost cried.

The mad acceleration had only lasted for a minute, but it had been the longest minute of its life.

Thankful for everything in this world, I’ve survived!

“It’s not over yet; don’t start feeling sentimental,” Monkey said.

“Could you not jinx us, please?”

But from behind, the union mechas’ ships retransitioned and appeared above them.

Their level of caution towards Monkey was raised once more, and their weapons were now aimed at his mecha.

“Warning, your actions have exceeded the limits of our tolerance. Please disarm immediately and await punishment.”

“They’re actually talking about punishment!” Teddy Bear exclaimed, “Do they have law enforcement authority?”

“They don’t, but they’ve contracted a portion of the power, so you could say they’re cops,” Monkey helpfully explained.

“I hate cops!”

But no sooner had it finished complaining, two even more terrifying mechas appeared in front of them.

One mecha was a ghastly green all over, its poisonous-looking paint job making the dozens of meters tall mecha appear as the most vile of toxins, its twisted exterior giving it an eerie look.

The other was varicolored, fitted with large neon lights beneath its armor, making it arrive on the scene already equipped with various Light Effects.

Seeing the two newly appeared mechas, Teddy Bear had no doubt they were targeting it, and this made its death seem all the more certain.

To its surprise, however, Monkey actually relaxed the neural connection system and said with a relieved tone, “We caught up.”

“What’s going on, are those two mechas allies?”

“Hmm, Liuzi and Xiemen Waidao, the winner and the runner-up of this competition. They will appear when players approach the competition star. Most of the time, NPCs play their part, but occasionally they can show up in person as an extra Easter egg.”

“Do you have that much clout? What’s your relationship with them?”

“A fighting relationship.”

“Who won?”

“Don’t ask such obvious questions.”

Teddy Bear wanted to ask more, but heard someone connect to their mechas and then spoke, “Monkey, we’re here. Next time just call me, and we’ll team up to smash Liuzi’s stupid face and post the video online—it’ll be hilarious.”

“Shut up,” the mech adorned in a myriad of colors said helplessly.

Both mechas stood at sixty meters tall, dwarfing Monkey’s mecha by comparison.

Even the alliance’s spaceship seemed like a toy in front of the two titans; the oppressive force of the champion mechas left the alliance pilots silent for a while before they managed to say, “This is the Alliance Mecha…”

“Scram,” Xiemen Waidao said irritably.

One simple word filled Teddy Bear with a liking for Xiemen Waidao, and he was sure he would get along with him.

Facing Xiemen Waidao, the Alliance Mecha didn’t waste any more words.

Their spaceship began warp jumping and disappeared in a few seconds, leaving behind only the champion mechas and Monkey’s scrappy mecha.

With the crisis now averted, Teddy Bear finally relaxed, reflecting on just how arduous the journey had been.

They were then captured by the force field of the two champion mechas and taken to the competition star.

After meeting up with the two players, Monkey could finally breathe a sigh of relief.

In the story mode of “Spirit Vessel,” Xiemen Waidao and Liuzi are special NPCs, and they are the only two players who can interfere in others’ games in story mode.

Normally, they provide extra help to players, but not excessively, and afterwards they would be replaced by game NPCs.

However, this also means that as long as they don’t help the players, they can stay indefinitely.

Using this loophole, which isn’t quite a bug, Xiemen Waidao and Liuzi can stick around for a long time.

In their private rest area, Monkey briefed them about Teddy Bear’s situation.

Xiemen Waidao and Liuzi looked at Teddy Bear in surprise, unable to imagine that he was the Easter egg.

“The Easter egg this time is a bit small, isn’t it?” Squirrel Xiemen Waidao said with confusion, “Aren’t the Easter eggs arranged by your boss supposed to change the entire gameplay? This little guy doesn’t seem enough.”

These words diminished Teddy Bear’s fondness for Xiemen Waidao somewhat.

Liuzi stared at Teddy Bear for a while and then asked, “Do you have any special abilities?”

“Does being exceptionally good at telling dirty jokes count?”

Liuzi and Xiemen Waidao exchanged glances, then took Teddy Bear to the next room, and soon laughter erupted from the two of them.

Bringing Teddy Bear back, Xiemen Waidao had already started to buddy up with him, and Liuzi couldn’t help saying, “That’s too vulgar, too perverted, like hell, but why do I like it so much.”

Seeing their reaction, Monkey increasingly resented being only seventeen years old.

After confirming Teddy Bear’s skills, they sat together to discuss the subsequent developments.

From what they could see, the plot had been significantly altered.

Previously, players would never encounter the Alliance Mecha en route, as this behind-the-scenes boss would only appear in the late game. Its appearance now was undoubtedly premature.

This was an expression of the plot’s containing force, and it would trigger even greater uncertainties, until they returned Monkey to where he came from.

Having sorted out the current situation, Liuzi said, “We can help you resist the Alliance Mecha for a while, but we can’t offer extra assistance, meaning you’re going to have a really tough start. But since it’s Monkey, there shouldn’t be a problem initially. However, you should know there’s an obstacle, one we’ve all tried before but can’t surpass no matter what.”

“What obstacle?” asked Teddy Bear, nervously.

“The instant-kill barrier,” Monkey explained, “The Alliance Mecha will eventually create Artificial Artifact Spirits in the later stages, and these spirits have overwhelming power against ordinary mechas. Without a unique Artifact Spirit, you can’t pass it. But it’s good that you’re here, we can figure out how to get through this together.”

“…the pressure is huge!”
