Chapter 233: Discovery (Second Update)_2
If it were not for Gu Changqing who took away her dagger, she would have already killed Gu Chenglin, and then hanged herself.
Speaking of which, the dagger is still in Gu Changqing’s hands. He knows her intentions now, but she didn’t know why he still hasn’t acted against her…
The Yao Family matriarch was lost in numerous thoughts.
Gu Jiao noticed that her distress seemed heavier than before, and said to her, “Perhaps you have developed drug resistance. I will change your medication.”
The matriarch of the Yao Family said, “Alright.”
Gu Jiao hadn’t opened the first aid kit for a long time. The last time she did was when she was suturing that man, back when she was still untouched by marriage.
However, she vaguely remembered that new antidepressants were added to the first aid kit.
Now, Gu Jiao no longer deliberately hides the first aid kit in front of the matriarch of the Yao Family. The matriarch occasionally saw the contents and found them peculiar, but only attributed it to her lack of exposure and didn’t suspect anything.
Gu Jiao found the antidepressants and explained how to take them to the matriarch, “You must never forget to take your medication again.”
The matriarch of the Yao Family shook her head, “I won’t.”
At that moment, she had been overcome with anger, driven to insanity. But when she sobered up, she experienced a chilling fear. If she had died together with Gu Chenglin, she would never see her children again.
Jiaojiao and Yanyan would end up like the three brothers, children without a mother.
How could she possibly do that to them?
Gu Jiao talked with the matriarch of the Yao Family for a while, and watched her take the medication. One of the medicines had a tranquillising effect. Soon, the matriarch leaned back in her rattan chair and fell asleep.
Gu Jiao covered her with a blanket.
The housemaid, hearing no more sounds from inside, softly pushed the door open and entered. She glanced at the sleeping matriarch of the Yao Family, and whispered to Gu Jiao, “Is madam asleep?”
Gu Jiao nodded, and left the room.
The housemaid also followed her out, softly closing the door, “Miss, how is madam’s condition?”
Gu Jiao said, “Her condition has worsened again, becoming almost as bad as when she was at the Villa.”
The housemaid, scared, asked, “Is it that serious?”
Gu Jiao responded, “It’s not as severe as it was at the beginning.”
The housemaid showed some relief, and then sighed melancholically, “After madam returned, her mood was actually not very good. She was holding it all in until the day she went to Bishui Alley, found out that the Young Master was being bullied, and completely snapped. She went to the third young master’s courtyard and made a massive fuss… The madam even brought a dagger… The madam said ‘We should all die together’… I was scared to death. Thank heavens nothing happened, otherwise…”
Gu Jiao was unaware of this incident.
According to the housemaid’s description, the matriarch of the Yao Family had completely lost her sanity at that moment.
It wasn’t strange that the matriarch wanted to punish Gu Chenglin, but wanting to kill Gu Chenglin and dying with him was bewildering.
The former came from a mother’s anger, while the latter was the suicidal tendencies of a person with depression.
The matriarch had been on steady treatment for a while now, and she had only missed two doses of her medicine. It shouldn’t have escalated so quickly.
“What has the madam been eating lately?” Gu Jiao began to delve into the matriarch’s diet.
The housemaid reported in detail, “… Ever since the incident with the nanny, I have paid close attention to madam’s meals.”
“Are there any leftover meals from this morning? Let me see them.” Gu Jiao said.
“Yes! Madam’s appetite hasn’t been good, she only ate a bit and didn’t touch the rest. It’s still sitting behind the screen cupboard.” The housemaid went to fetch the matriarch’s breakfast.
Gu Jiao inspected every single item.
The housemaid asked, “Is there a problem?”
Gu Jiao shook her head, “No, take me to see madam’s bedroom.”
“Oh!” The housemaid led Gu Jiao to the matriarch’s room, where Gu Jiao inspected every corner, even the incense, soap nuts, rouge, and face powder weren’t overlooked. n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
“There’s also no issue here,” she said.
Could it be that she was overthinking it?
Gu Jiao then asked, “Has madam been in close contact with anyone?”
The housemaid shook her head, “No, madam hardly ever leaves the courtyard here in the mansion. She only goes out to visit Miss and the Young Master. The Marquis used to visit often, but recently he’s been busy with the Ministry of Works and often doesn’t return home for days.”
Gu Jiao rubbed her chin thoughtfully.
With the incident of the matriarch’s poisoning in the Manor still fresh in the housemaid’s mind, she asked with apprehension, “Miss, are you suspecting that someone… is trying to harm the madam?”
Gu Jiao pondered for a moment, then said, “From the current investigation, there’s no related evidence.”
Just as her words ended, a cold wind blowing carrying a few snowflakes and a trace of elusive, faint fragrance gently drifted over.
Gu Jiao looked in the direction the scent was coming from, “What’s over that wall?”
