Chapter 193: 124 Big Brother (First Update)
Early next morning, she located Xiao Liulang and asked him about the location of the Xiangyun Inn.
Xiao Liulang was puzzled: “Where did you hear about Xiangyun Inn?”
Gu Jiao calmly replied: “I heard about it yesterday while shopping at the marketplace. Is their food really that good?”
Xiao Liulang seriously said: “That place is a den of iniquity.”
“Huh?” Gu Jiao was taken aback.
Xiao Liulang explained: “On the surface, it’s an inn, but in reality, it’s a gambling house. Many were lured and deceived, don’t get fooled.”
Xiao Liulang firmly believed that Gu Jiao was being fooled by some dubious person and refused to tell her where the Xiangyun Inn is. Scratching her head, Gu Jiao had to think of another way.
After breakfast, Xiao Liulang left to find a suitable private school for Gu Yan and Gu Xiaoshun. Gu Jiao, under the pretext of buying groceries, went to the marketplace and directly hired a carriage: “To Xiangyun Inn.”
The coachman said: “Xiangyun Inn is quite far. Are you in a rush? If not, please wait a bit; I will get another passenger.”
“I’m in a hurry.” Gu Jiao said.
“That would be two hundred copper plates.” said the coachman.
Xiangyun Inn was on the other end of the Capital City, and his horse was not a swift one. It would take half of the day just to go and return, likely preventing him from taking any other jobs.
“Alright.” Gu Jiao agreed.
The coachman was fairly familiar with the city’s layout and took the shortest route, but they encountered two major officials on the road that day, causing all the citizens to make way.
By the time Gu Jiao arrived near Xiangyun Inn, the assassination had already commenced.
Hearing the commotion in the alley, Gu Jiao jumped off the carriage without hesitation and rounded to the other end of the alley.
The intense showdown was underway; no one noticed the tiny figure stealthily infiltrating their rear.
Gu Jiao found a sack hidden in the corner, carried out the unconscious child inside, and replaced the child with a big stone.
The assassins were no match for the man. After exchanging glances, they were about to resort to dirty tricks.
One of them picked up the sack with a sword and hurled it viciously at the man. The powerful sword energy sliced open the sack and the content inside flew out.
All the assassins were stunned.
Wasn’t it supposed to be a child? Why was it a stone?
The man was also puzzled. What kind of trick was this? Was it some sort of modern art technique of deception?
Decoying with a stone?
The man effortlessly cleaved the stone into two halves.
The best opportunity for assassination had passed. Realizing that they couldn’t kill the man that day, the assassins retreated after feinting a few moves.
The man didn’t pursue after them. Putting away his sword and preparing to mount his horse, he suddenly paused, turned towards the alley, and asked tentatively, “Who’s there?”
Somehow, he managed to notice her. His senses were incredibly sharp.
Gu Jiao, carrying the unconscious child, came out from behind the pillar: “It’s me.”
The man recognized Gu Jiao: “Why are you here?”
Gu Jiao just shrugged.
The man’s gaze fell on the child in her arms. At first glance, it seemed like the child she held that day, but on a closer look, it wasn’t. The kid was bald, but this child’s hair was long and tied up.
And this child wasn’t as adorable as Yu Xue, the kid from the other day.
After contemplating for a moment and recalling the stone that flew out of the sack, he seemed to remember the surprise on the assassins’ faces. Could it be–
The man looked at Gu Jiao, puzzled: “Did you swap the child out?”
“Yes.” Gu Jiao didn’t deny. “I happened to pass by when I saw them capturing a child. I followed them and, as they began fighting with you, I took the child out.”
She spoke casually, but the man knew that it would be extremely difficult to tail those assassins without being discovered. They were no ordinary assassins.
His gaze at Gu Jiao was increasingly puzzled: “If I remember correctly, you live near the Guozijian. One is in the east, and the other is in the west. Why would you pass by here? What were you doing here?”
Gu Jiao paused, looking towards the nearby Xiangyun Inn, said: “Uh… gambling?”
The man: “…”
If she didn’t want to say, then so be it.
Of course, the man couldn’t guess that Gu Jiao had come specifically to rescue him.
While they were conversing, the child’s parents arrived.
“My child–my child–”
The woman was in tears.
Gu Jiao handed over the child to her and said: “He inhaled some paralysis medicine. The dosage was not high, so it’s no big deal. He’ll wake up by nightfall.”
“Thank you, Miss! Thank you so much!” The woman, cradling her child, knelt before Gu Jiao, expressing her gratitude through her tears. Her husband also knelt and bowed deeply.
