Chapter 215: Escalation!
During this short moment of confusion, Ephine had taken the chance to attack the lich once more. In a battle like this, a moment of confusion could be fatal, and this small distraction from Thufrat was enough to turn the battle in their favour. With a wave of her arm, a golden sword materialised out of thin air and propelled itself through the air.
The lich's soul had trembled when Thufrat's bloodline went out of control, and it had still not recovered. Seeing the sword flying towards it, it could only try to brace itself.
The sword condensed of pure light magic flew into the body of the lich without a hitch.1 Since she wasn't prepared in advance, the attack wasn't strong enough to finish the lich off completely, but the damage was still severe.
The lich was sent flying, whilst the soul fires in its eye sockets dimmed considerably. With a single attack, Ephine had managed to almost completely kill the lich off. The lich, which was flying through the air, started chanting in a weird language. Dark mana started emanating off of its body, contaminating the surroundings it passed.
Anything touched by the mana corroded, making the originally lush greenery more and more gloomy.
With a loud sound, an immense amount of mana started seeping out of the cracked ground. The lich didn't have anywhere close to this amount of mana, which baffled both Ephine and Adam.
"I was originally going to play with you guys a little more, but since you've successfully enraged me, then you can go and ROT IN HELL!"
The lich was enraged beyond belief. A moment of underestimation had actually damaged the source of its life and power severely. It had originally intended to have a bit of fun before going back to check on the experiment it had hidden in the basement. This experiment was beyond important, as it concerned secrets about the universe itself.
If the lich succeeded with its experiment, unlimited wealth and power would be more than just a dream.
The dark mana seeping out of the ground was beginning to grow more and more intense by the second, and soon, it had formed an enormous magic circle in the air. The magic circle was more than twice the size of the magic circle that the lich had created by itself earlier. This magic circle was beyond the scope of the lich's power; it was something that had been left behind by his benefactor.
Instead of being pitch-black like the previous magic circle, this one had crisscrossing patterns of red and gold weaved into it. Ephine and Atar were too busy to take notice of the strange colours on the magic circle, otherwise they would've quickly noticed something amiss. A magic circle of mainly the dark element containing light magic?
There was practically only a single creature that had these two conflicting elements.
After less than 10 seconds, the pressure created by the magic circle eased up slightly, but in its place, a myriad of different undead started appearing. A bunch of lower-level undead such as skeletons and zombies appeared numbering in the hundreds. If that was all, this large summoning circle would've been a major disappointment, but it also started summoning different kinds of demons to fight.
Small imps with blazing red skin, humanoid demons with large black horns, as well as Tauren with large hulking physiques. Demons kept popping out everywhere, and the number of enemies just kept on rising. Before long, a giant bone dragon broke out of ground. On the back of the dragon was another death knight, however, this one was quite different from the first one.
Not only was it riding on top of a giant bone dragon, but it also wore silvery-white armour instead of black.
The pressure on everyone was getting greater and greater by the second. Ephine and Adam were completely surrounded; they were basically in the eye of the storm. Compared to them, Thufrat, Atar and the wood-elf were still fine, since they were fighting the other death knight a bit further away. Seeing his own mother get surrounded by enemies on all sides, Atar was getting a bit anxious.
Thufrat naturally noticed this, since Atar's attacks grew more and more erratic as time passed. The only real problem was that Thufrat had no idea what to do about it. Opening a path so that Atar could get to his mom would just be idiotic, since if he made it, he would be surrounded together with them. Before he could ponder too much about what to do, a pleasant voice suddenly broke the tension.
"Can you guys buy me some time?"
"Of course, just make sure it's worth it!"
Thufrat replied without thinking too much about it. He wasn't sure what the elf was planning on doing, but hopefully, it could make their situation a little better.
"O great tree of life, provide us with your endless grace; World Tree!"
With a short incantation, a massive amount of mana gathered around the wood elf using a small tree branch as a medium. A small sapling broke through the dry soil, before quickly growing into a towering tree. The tree grew larger and large, and the vibrant green mana and life force it emitted started to heal everything around it.
Thufrat could feel his mana, as well as his exhausted body recovering rapidly. The tree even seemed to buff his strength a step further, making him stronger than he already was. This naturally applied to everyone else as well, not just Thufrat.
The ground that had originally been cracked and dry started to naturally recover. The numerous undead and demons could feel their strength weakening by at least 15%. This spell that the wood-elf had used had singlehandedly managed to turn the situation on the battlefield around. Even though they were still far away from being able to win this fight, they now stood a chance at least.
Everyone was motivated, and quickly mounted their counterattack on the undead. Thufrat stimulated his bloodline even further, and started to fiercely fight with the death knight once again. Since Thufrat could practically fight the death knight on his own, with the support of the wood-elf, Atar decided to help his mother.
His originally apathetic expression had turned ferocious, and his body started glowing with a myriad of different colours.
Atar didn't normally like using magic, but he was very talented in using body-enhancing magic, and he was finally going all out this time. The undead in his way was instantly blasted away with a punch, but when he encountered the demons, he was hampered. When he enhanced his body with, magic, he could even beat a Tauren in physical strength.
The only problem was that the demons didn't care about fighting "fair" or not. They came at him together, which made the fight hard for Atar.
At first, he only fought against two Taurens, and he could hold his own, but soon, a few black-horned demons joined in. The black-horned demons, known for their brutality and excessive speed, were an annoying adversary, but Atar could still manage. It wasn't until a few imps started hurling spells at him that he was beginning to get suppressed.
