Chapter 435 434: Tattoos
435 434: Tattoos
"Forsaken and Cursed City of the Old Ones?"
Selene mumbled with a baffled tone, and Corey's expression also portrayed his bafflement and intrigue.
The guard, Nima, nonchalantly waved his left hand, "Don't worry about it. It's not something Outsiders like you should worry about."
Corey furrowed his brows slightly because Nima had mumbled something else after those words. It was so subtle to the point that Corey felt like he must have used a skill to conceal his words, but Corey heard it through his Ears of Omniscience.
"You were lucky to survive the Primal Expanse, but you just had to arrive here of all places."
These were the words Corey heard Nima speak, and Corey could not help but become curious and also slightly frustrated.
'Don't tell me that there's a being like the Capra King that would not allow me to leave this city or region in peace?'
Just as Corey was about to release a frustrated sigh, the massive silver rune-etched gate moved. It slowly opened, and a blue fog was released, making it seem like the breath of a terrifying beast.
As the massive silver gates opened, Nima's voice drifted into their ears.
"Don't forget, make sure you adhere to the rules of our city or there'll be terrible consequences."
Selene and Corey glanced at the silver-armored guard, and Selene nodded while Corey shifted his gaze back to the silver gates.
Without waiting for Selene, he approached the gate. Selene was not slow to react, and she quickly caught up to him with quick steps.
Eventually, they passed through the gates and entered the city.
The first thing both Corey and Selene noticed from the moment they stepped into the city was the presence of a massive monolith made of black metal. Wrapped around this monolith were the seven massive chains and the sight of seven massive chains hanging in the skies above them while swaying lightly at times was truly a sight to behold.
Surprise, intrigue, and curiosity burned in Corey's gaze as he stared at the massive monolith at the center of the city.
He looked away, and then he observed his surroundings.
He was slightly surprised when he saw that every building was made of dark basalt, and every single building he could see had runes on it.
The surprise in his eyes deepened when he noticed that every single building had blue torches, and even the source of light on the streets were blue torches placed at strategic points.
Rumble
A soft rumble resounded from above, and Corey looked up. Once again, the surprise in his eyes deepened when he noticed the sky above them.
Unlike the normal red sky outside the gates of Gravenstone City, the sky of Gravenstone City had drastically changed.
There were black clouds that occasionally released the sound of thunder or the flash of lightning.
Such a sight was not so shocking to Corey, but what shocked Corey was the abrupt change in the sky.
'When we were outside the gates, the sky was normal, but the sky inside the city is completely different?... Or was the sky outside the gate actually normal?'
Corey furrowed his brows in contemplation for a few seconds, and then he felt a gaze on him. He turned to his left, and then he saw Selene staring at him.
Corey raised his brows for a second, and then he glanced at the map in Selene's hands.
"Look for the city hall, a hotel, an inn or a place we can sleep, and a library on the map."
Selene did as she was told, and after fiddling around with the map, she was able to get a rough understanding of the layout of Gravenstone City.
"The city has four City Halls, and they're based in the North, South, West, and East of the city. We're currently in the Southern part of the city. It's not too far from us."
"There are multiple inns in the South according to the map, but there's only one library in the entire city, and it's at the center of the city."
Corey nodded, and then he gestured to the front, "Lead the way."
Selene did not know why, but when she heard Corey's words, it felt strange to her. From the moment she became Corey's slave and started interacting with him, she was always walking behind Corey, but this time around, she was taking the lead.
'I know it's temporary and stupid, but it feels nice to be in the lead once again… sigh… I was once a captain…From a captain of hopeless weaklings to a servant of an unfathomable monster. Which is better?'
Selene silently mocked herself while she followed the path shown by the map to the City Hall. While she was walking, she looked around and observed her surroundings.
The first thing that caught her attention were the people who were either subtly observing her or were observing her without being subtle at all. Nôv(el)B\\jnn
Most of them wore dark or muted clothes, and on their exposed bodies were strange tattoos. Almost everybody she saw had strange tattoos on the exposed part of their bodies, and the majority had expressions ranging from stern to hollow.
'Why do all of them have tattoos?'
Selene thought with a curious expression, and then she shifted her gaze away from the people to the buildings around her.
She noticed that all the buildings were black, and they had torches hanging either on the walls or at the tip of the roofs. She also noticed that each building had intricate runes on them that pulsed faintly.
Just as she was about to keep on observing her surroundings, a strange rumbling caught her attention. She stepped back as a large, two-wheeled cart passed by, drawn by two beasts that resembled horses.
The driver was a grizzled man with a tattoo spiraling down his arm, and he expertly guided the beasts, his gaze focused intently on the path ahead. As the cart rattled by, she noticed that it was filled with blue ores she did not recognize.
Although she was curious, she was not too curious.
Just as she was about to continue walking, she glanced at Corey, but just as she was about to look away, she stopped and her eyes slowly widened.
She saw Corey having slightly wide eyes and a drop of sweat sliding down his cheeks. To her disbelief, she saw Corey having a shocked expression that was filled with immense disbelief.
'What?'
She followed Corey's line of sight and the image of a female reflected in her pupils.
